Customers served by the City of Sioux Center’s municipal electric utility will see phased rate increases over the next two years after the Sioux Center City Council approved the third and final reading of an electric rate ordinance Tuesday.
The ordinance establishes a 7% electric rate increase effective in August 2026, followed by another 7% increase effective in August 2027. The council approved the measure unanimously after completing the required three readings with no additional public comments.
City officials have said the phased increases are intended to help the municipal electric utility keep pace with rising operating costs while continuing to provide reliable electric service and maintain the city’s electric infrastructure.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Dale Vander Berg thanked city staff for their work on the rate study, noting the importance of making gradual adjustments rather than allowing rates to fall behind operating costs. City officials also confirmed the first increase will take effect in August 2026, with the second increase scheduled for August 2027.
The ordinance repeals the city’s previous electric rate schedule and establishes the new rates for electricity sold by Sioux Center’s municipal electric utility.
