NCC President John Hartog spoke on a recent Daily Grind Episode about NCC’s new sports program and their expansion throughout Northwest Iowa.
NCC is looking to improve their recreation center to host competitive college sports. The first sport likely to be hosted is volleyball due to its local popularity, but basketball could be added in the future.
“In a board meeting in the near future at Northwest Iowa Community College. Our trustees will be taking a look at opening up and asking for proposals in the bidding process to put in some competition wood flooring in our lifelong learning recreation center, because up to this point we haven’t needed that. But going forward long term, we’re going to need that. So that will that will satisfy the need for volleyball. But see, what happens then is that we would want to leverage that flooring, and then we’d be looking at basketball down the road.”
NCC has multiple learning centers across Northwest Iowa called Regional Centers. Students can take classes in regional centers while still in high school and remaining closer to home. Hartog explains how the regional centers can help students in their educational development.
“We can project learning opportunities out throughout our service area, and especially for high school students who are taking concurrent credit. Yeah. Uh, they’re busy with band and, and volleyball and football and so forth. And so if they can be, uh, having learning opportunities that are closer at hand, that’s a win win for the families, for the students. And then later on, they could transfer those credits on to NCC with advanced standing.”
Each regional center has what’s called pathways, giving students the opportunity to learn about a specific topic.
