Crash Leads to Arrest

A Las Vegas woman was arrested Thursday morning after crashing a vehicle near Sioux Center.  The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated the accident on Harrison Avenue, two miles southeast of Sioux Center at 6:42am.

25-year-old Jocelyn Penado of Las Vegas was driving a Toyota Camry southbound on Harrison Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle and went into the ditch.  Penado was taken to Sioux Center Health for treatment of minor injuries.

During the investigation, deputies learned Penado had taken the Toyota from a South Dakota resident without permission.  Officers also believed alcohol was a factor in the crash.  Once released from medical care, Penado was taken to the Sioux County Jail and charged with operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license, no proof of insurance, and failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.

The case remains under investigation.  Penado was released on her own recognizance.
