Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground for New Home in Sioux Center

Several people attended the groundbreaking of a new Habitat for Humanity home in Sioux Center this (Friday) morning. Mayor Dave Krahling, Habitat staff, and community members joined Partner Family Nancy Martinez and her children, as dirt was turned in preparation for construction of the home. Martinez was notified in December that her family was chosen, and says hard to believe they are finally to the point of breaking ground and starting construction.

Martinez has been a Sioux Center resident since she was a sophomore in high school, she says Sioux Center is a great place to live. She says owning a home here gives her children room to grow, a place to create new memories, while providing a safe environment.

New Siouxland Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Shayla Becker, says she’s impressed with how well partners in Sioux County work with the organization. She says Sioux County Director Kurt Franje does a great job of bringing partners together and getting things done. Although Becker is new to the position, she has been involved with Habitat in other capacities, and says the mission of the organization is personal, and helping families gain home ownership means a lot to her because she was once in their shoes. She says helping families get on their feet and allowing them to have a safe, stable roof over their heads means the world to her.

Becker, Sioux Center Mayor Dave Krahling, Martinez and her six children, all scooped the earth to celebrate the groundbreaking of this home. Construction is scheduled to start in May, and the public is invited to help by volunteering donating, or sponsoring a stud.
