Sheldon Celebrates Connection to Lewis & Clark

After 34 years of work, the city of Sheldon celebrated the connection of its water treatment plant to the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System Tuesday.  The water has been flowing through Sheldon’s pipes for months already, but several local, regional, state, and national dignitaries gathered in Sheldon Tuesday to celebrate the connection.

Sheldon is the 18th of 20 communities in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa that are now connected to the system.

The water coming to Sheldon through the system comes from a series of wells that tap into an aquifer near the Missouri River in South Dakota.  The last Iowa member left to be connected is Sibley.  Sheldon’s water comes through Sioux Center and Hull, but Sibley’s will come from the Minnesota line.  Officials with Lewis & Clark say the $8.4 million contract for the Sibley service line was awarded in October of 2023, and substantial completion deadline for that portion of the project is July of 2025.
