Sioux Center Names New Police Chief

At Monday’s Sioux Center City Council meeting, council members moved to appoint Josh Koedam as the community’s new Police Chief. Josh Koedam is a 15-year veteran of the Sioux Center Police Department, and is scheduled to take the oath of office July 10.

A public hearing was held for an application of a Community Development Block Grant from the Family Crisis Center to remodel the office of the new proposed family visitation and exchange center. In order to apply for the grant, the city would have to serve as the proposed conduit for the grant funding. Grant amount requested is $600,000 with $540,000 local match from FCC.

Another hearing was held on the annexation of property owned by the Randy Vander Schaaf family. There is approximately 50 acres is located on the west side of Sioux Center along 4th St. NW., the council approved a resolution assenting to the annexation of the property.

There was also a public hearing for a 4th Ave. NE Water Main Replacement plan. The project consists of replacing 1,960 feet of 4” water main with 8” water main on 4th Ave. NE from 7th St. to Defender Drive. The project will remove a water main on Dordt’s campus so the university can construct an addition to their Campus Center. The council accepted the plans with a low bid of $404,000 and awarded the contract to Firm Foundation.

Council also ratified the hiring of James Van Veldhuizen to fill a vacancy in the police department. Van Veldhuizen has recently been working in a reserve officer role for the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

In other business, the council received a report that Phase 1 of the Highway 75 project is two-weeks ahead of schedule, and the new 13th Ave. SW intersection will have a traffic signal in place June 30.
