A new paved trail near the ball diamonds east of the American State Bank Sports Complex in Sioux Center is improving accessibility at one of the community’s busiest recreation areas, with more upgrades still to come.
Sioux Center Parks Director Lee Van Meeteren says the project was prompted in part by public feedback after the fields were first used last year.
The city had initially planned to address those improvements later, but moved up the timeline to better accommodate the heavy spring and summer ball season.
The project includes a paved walkway and concrete pads for bleachers, allowing for improved access for spectators, including those using wheelchairs, and creating a more defined route through the complex.
Van Meeteren says accessibility goes beyond just athletes.
The new trail also provides clearer navigation for visitors.
The project cost is about $40,000, with the Parks Department completing site preparation work ahead of time to maximize how much paving could be completed within that budget.
City officials say the trail is just one piece of a larger, long-term effort to expand connectivity in the area.
Van Meeteren says the work “forced our hand” a bit, accelerating part of a broader trail system plan that will eventually connect the ballfields to Sioux Center’s larger trail network.
Future improvements are already being planned, including:
•Extending trail connections north toward the Axis Apartments near Interstates
•Additional trail paving around the new pond in northeast Sioux Center
•Continued upgrades to amenities, including plans for accessible restroom facilities at the ballfield complex
Van Meeteren says the goal is to continue building toward a more connected and inclusive park system.
Work on the current trail is largely complete, with final touch-ups and installation of bleachers still underway.
