State Roadway Fatalities Rise Over Christmas Weekend

During the Christmas weekend the state of Iowa saw an increase in its fatalities on the roadway. Public Information Officer Sergeant Alex Dinkla commented on some of the trends they’ve seen in the past year.

Not only did the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) see an increase in fatalities over the weekend, but they also saw similar traits in some of the crashes.

There were eight total new crashes during the weekend according to the Iowa DOT. The Iowa State Patrol found one commonality in the fatalities they investigated.

The total roadway fatalities for the year in the State of Iowa sits at 372 after the Christmas weekend. Sergeant Dinkla says the Iowa State Patrol hopes to see a decrease during New Year’s Eve weekend.

Dinkla says that Iowans should do two things before they put their car into drive this weekend.

Safety on the roadways of course is extremely important year round but especially during the Winter. You can hear Sioux Center Police Chief Josh Koedam discussing the importance of that on December 27th’s episode of the Daily Grind.
