Spirit Lake Man Sentenced to 10 Years in O’Brien County Shooting Plea Deal

A Spirit Lake man originally charged with attempted murder in an O’Brien County road-rage shooting has been sentenced after reaching a plea agreement.

Thirty-three-year-old Jonathan Oldenkamp pleaded guilty to one count of reckless use of a firearm and two counts of assault on persons in certain occupations. He had originally pleaded not guilty before later changing his plea as part of the agreement.

Under the plea deal, Oldenkamp was sentenced to five years in prison for the reckless use of a firearm conviction and five years for each of the two assault convictions. The two assault sentences will be served concurrently with one another, while the firearms sentence will be served consecutively, resulting in a total prison term of 10 years.

The charges stem from a May 25, 2025, shooting on Highway 18 near Hartley. According to court records, Oldenkamp fired multiple shots at another vehicle while both vehicles were traveling on the highway. Investigators said the victim’s vehicle was struck by six bullets, and the driver was hit by gunfire before driving himself to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment.

The assault charges arose following Oldenkamp’s arrest, when court documents alleged he injured an O’Brien County deputy and the sheriff while officers were attempting to remove him from a patrol vehicle at the jail.
