The Sioux County Regional Airport is tackling a years-long capacity crunch with a major infrastructure expansion on its southern grounds. The facility, which opened in late 2018 as a consolidation of local municipal airfields, has outgrown its original footprint much faster than anticipated.

The airport houses 80 to 85 aircraft, causing a multi-year storage bottleneck for regional pilots.

Prepping for Growth

To address the soaring demand, the airport board purchased just over 20 acres of land three years ago. Crews moved roughly 200,000 yards of dirt in 2024 to level the future development sites.

According to Andrew Schreier, President of the charter company AirFlair, because the construction is localized on a far corner of the property, the work has completely avoided disrupting daily runway or taxiway operations.

Project Scope and Upgrades

The expansion project targets both immediate aircraft storage needs and taxiway traffic efficiency. Key features of the southern grounds development include:

  • New AirFlair Hangar: A new expansion hangar is currently nearing completion to provide immediate relief for the aircraft backlog.
  • Future Hangar Plots: The site layout designates space for two additional hangars to match ongoing regional interest.
  • Ramp Space Expansion: Crews are laying additional concrete apron ramp space to ease taxiway overflow and streamline aircraft staging.

Financial Breakdown

The total cost of the project is estimated at nearly 2 million dollars, over 1 million of which comes from grants and entitlements from the FAA. Another 403 thousand from local and private funding matches, and over 280 thousand from the Department of Aviation at the Iowa DOT.
