A Rock Rapids woman is facing a felony charge after authorities say an infant suffered life-threatening injuries earlier this year.
According to court documents, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19-year-old Morgan De Weerd of Rock Rapids this past Wednesday.
In a statement, a deputy says that in late January, an eight-to-nine-month-old child was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The deputy alleges those injuries were the result of what she described as DeWeerd’s “neglectful actions.” Authorities say the injuries caused scarring that is believed to be permanent.
De Weerd has been charged with child endangerment resulting in serious injury, a Class C felony. If convicted, she could face up to ten years in prison.
Authorities also say that during the arrest, De Weerd was found in possession of a THC vape device. She is additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance – marijuana, a misdemeanor.
A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 1st.
At last report, De Weerd remained in custody at the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids on a $10,000 bond.
It should be noted that a criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
