Hawarden will close out the summer with five days of activities during Big Sioux River Days.
The celebration begins Thursday with a classic cruise downtown. Friday includes a Strong for Life workout, West Sioux’s home football game and Prayer at the Pool.

“We actually have a handful of events that used to be done and then have been brought back by request. The three-on-three tournament was really big, and so Jerome Hoy brought that back last year. Egg and water balloon toss came back again. We’ll talk about it here in a little bit, but the Dry Creek Music Festival—that’s been brought back by popular request. So it’s a really good combination of things. We’ve always done new things and then things that we’re bringing back.”
Saturday’s new attractions include cardboard boat races and roller skating at Old City Hall. An outdoor vendor fair will also run Saturday through Monday. Hawarden Chamber Director Julie Coyle says years of outreach helped the fair grow…
“My first year, I believe there was eleven vendors. And so we’ve been slowly just continuing to reach out, broaden the branches and invite people. And this year it has blown up to 105.”
Sunday includes the Dry Creek Music Festival, a home run derby and fireworks. Monday’s main Labor Day parade begins at 1:30.
