Hull Burglary Case Update: One Sentenced, Two Plead Not Guilty

One person has been sentenced, while two others have entered not guilty pleas in connection with a northwest Iowa burglary case.

According to court records, 33-year-old Jesse Van Leeuwen and 34-year-old Jakob Gamboa have both pleaded not guilty to multiple charges stemming from the investigation.

Jesse Van Leeuwen is charged with first-degree theft, second-degree theft, second-degree criminal mischief, and third-degree burglary. Court documents also show he faces two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Records indicate he has waived his right to a speedy trial.

Gamboa has pleaded not guilty to first-degree theft, third-degree burglary, and second-degree criminal mischief. Court records show he has not waived his right to a speedy trial. A pre-trial conference in his case is scheduled for April 27th at 9:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, 60-year-old Jodi Van Leeuwen has reached a plea agreement in the case. According to court records, she pleaded guilty to one count of accessory after the fact.

As part of that agreement, she was sentenced to two days in the Sioux County Jail, with credit for time already served. Court documents also state she will serve seven days on electronic monitoring and has been granted work release. A previous charge of possession of a controlled substance was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The charges stem from a burglary investigation that began in late February. Authorities say stolen items were recovered during the execution of a search warrant at a home in Hull.

Court records indicate that items were recovered from multiple residences connected to both Gamboa and Jesse Van Leeuwen. The stolen property is believed to have come from a Hull business and was valued at more than $10,000.

Gamboa was taken into custody on March 1st, while Jesse Van Leeuwen was arrested on March 11th.

During the investigation, a search warrant was also executed at Jodi Van Leeuwen’s residence. According to court documents, law enforcement located a THC/cannabinoid vape device in a bedroom trash container. Records also state she was assisting a person with active warrants by providing transportation and sending money while that individual was avoiding law enforcement.

The case remains ongoing.

It should be noted that a criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
