Work continues to move forward on the Highway 75 reconstruction project in Sioux Center, with crews making steady progress on underground utilities while keeping traffic moving through much of the construction zone.
City officials say that’s been one of the biggest early wins of the construction season.
City Manager Scott Wynja says crews have been able to complete much of the work by shifting lanes instead of fully closing the roadway.
He adds that keeping north-south traffic open as long as possible has helped limit disruptions, even as work intensifies.
Utilities work moving north
Contractor Vander Pol Excavating has completed much of the water and stormwater installation outside the main traffic lanes between 5th and 7th Streets North. Crews have now shifted their focus farther north, working along the east side of Highway 75 from 9th to 12th Streets North.
Recent work includes:
•Water and stormwater installation between 5th and 7th Street North
•Traffic signal base work at 7th Street North
•Seeding areas from last year’s construction
•Colored concrete pours and granite paver installation in downtown medians
•Repairs to pedestrian signage damaged by wind
Looking ahead, crews plan to:
•Install sewer main from 12th to 8th Streets North
•Continue water and storm sewer installation between 9th and 12th Streets North
•Complete downtown medians and begin planting in planters
Downtown taking shape
Downtown Sioux Center is also beginning to show visible changes, with granite pavers and colored concrete being added to the medians. Those medians are narrower in the downtown corridor due to the proximity of buildings along the highway.
Closures still ahead
While traffic remains open for now, city officials caution that full closures are expected later in the project — possibly toward the end of May.
Even so, Wynja says the overall timeline remains on track.
He adds that the weather will continue to play a key role, but early-season progress has been encouraging.
Public meeting scheduled
The next monthly construction update meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sioux Center Public Library. City staff and engineers will provide updates and answer questions from the public.
Project overview
The 2.5-mile Highway 75 reconstruction project is a joint effort between the City of Sioux Center and the Iowa Department of Transportation. The project includes rebuilding pavement, upgrading utilities, and redesigning the corridor with a focus on safety, function, and community character.
Officials say the improvements are designed to serve Sioux Center for decades to come.
