A Dordt University professor has been selected for a national lectureship focused on the relationship between Christian faith and mathematics.

Dr. Valorie Zonnefeld, professor of mathematics at Dordt, will serve as the 2026–27 Brabenec Lecturer through the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences.

The Brabenec Lectureship helps colleges and universities host conversations about faith and the mathematical sciences, particularly at institutions that may not otherwise have the resources to bring in speakers specializing in the subject.

During the academic year, Zonnefeld will travel to colleges and universities to meet with students and faculty and discuss how Christian faith can be integrated with mathematics and related disciplines.

The Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences was founded in 1976 by Christian mathematics faculty seeking to connect their faith with their academic work. The association includes mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and mathematics educators.

Zonnefeld says the organization has played an important role in her professional and spiritual development.

“I love the ACMS,” Zonnefeld said. “The members have played a huge role in my development as a Christian mathematics professor. I anticipate the biannual conferences in a similar way that you anticipate a family reunion; it is such a supportive community. I am honored to represent the ACMS as the Brabanec lecturer.”

The lectureship also builds upon Zonnefeld’s previous writing and speaking about faith and mathematics.

“The lectureship builds on the work that I’ve done writing and speaking on issues of faith and math,” she said. “Unfortunately, many people view math as not connected to their faith. I am passionate about helping students and teachers make connections between their faith and math.”

At Dordt, Zonnefeld works with students preparing to become mathematics teachers. She says the national position will allow her to continue that work at other institutions.

“My work at Dordt supports preservice teachers in their growth as Christian mathematics teachers,” Zonnefeld said. “The Brabanec lectureship opens doors to continue this work with students and professors beyond Dordt’s campus.”
