Spirit Lake Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge in Hartley Shooting

A Spirit Lake man has been arrested on a warrant and faces attempted murder and felony assault charges stemming from two separate incidents.

Thirty-three-year-old Johnathan Oldenkamp, of Spirit Lake, is charged with attempted murder in connection with a May 25th shooting in Hartley. According to a criminal complaint filed by the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a 9-1-1 call from Fernando Curiel, who reported he was driving westbound on Highway 18 when another vehicle pulled alongside him, and shots were fired.

Curiel told deputies he turned around to get away, but the suspect vehicle followed, and shots were fired again. Curiel was struck but was able to drive himself to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.

Investigators say video surveillance and a statewide law enforcement bulletin led to the suspect vehicle being located and stopped by the Spirit Lake Police Department. Curiel later identified Oldenkamp as his former supervisor at AMPI, noting that Oldenkamp had recently been terminated from his job.

After reviewing ballistics evidence, cell phone records, and searching a storage unit where Oldenkamp had been living — along with interviewing him — authorities filed charges related to the shooting.

When Oldenkamp was arrested on Wednesday, O’Brien County Sheriff’s officials say he also assaulted two officers, allegedly kicking Deputy Lee Vellema and Sheriff Bruce Devereaux.

Oldenkamp is charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony, and two counts of assault on a peace officer, now legally termed assault on persons in certain occupations, both Class D felonies. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison on the attempted murder charge and up to five years on each assault charge.

Oldenkamp is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Monday, December 22nd. At last report, he remained in the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar on a total bond of $35,000.
