(KIWA) — A Madison, South Dakota man faces a felony charge following a high-speed pursuit Tuesday afternoon in western Lyon County.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Lyon County Clerk of Court, a sheriff’s deputy accuses 20-year-old Sam Beldin of fleeing from law enforcement at speeds reaching 105 miles per hour. Beldin reportedly contacted authorities later that day and arranged to turn himself in.
Pursuit Begins Near Granite
The deputy stated that radar showed a 2007 Dodge Magnum traveling 85 miles per hour in a 60-mile-per-hour zone on 140th Street near Granite on Tuesday, July 21.
According to the complaint, the deputy activated his emergency lights and pursued the vehicle through Granite. The deputy alleges the vehicle committed several traffic violations during the pursuit and reached 105 miles per hour shortly before crossing into South Dakota.
The complaint states that the vehicle continued committing traffic violations after entering South Dakota. The deputy eventually ended the pursuit after the driver entered a second series of gravel roads, citing safety concerns.
Suspect Arranges to Surrender
Approximately 20 minutes later, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in South Dakota informed Lyon County authorities that Beldin had called and wanted to turn himself in, according to the complaint.
Beldin then met the Lyon County deputy at the Klondike Bridge. He was taken into custody and booked into the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids.
Beldin faces a charge of eluding while exceeding the speed limit by at least 25 miles per hour, a class D felony. A class D felony is punishable by up to five years in prison if a person is convicted.
He also faces misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, three counts of excessive speed, failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to maintain control, careless driving, failure to yield to a vehicle on the right, and unsafe passing.
Preliminary Hearing Scheduled
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Friday, July 31.
Beldin was released from the Lyon County Jail on Thursday, July 23, after posting a $7,000 bond.
The charges are allegations, and Beldin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
