The sheriff’s office is encouraging residents to keep safety top of mind during the holiday weekend by only using fireworks on property where they have permission, keeping a water source nearby, and avoiding the use of fireworks during dry or windy conditions.

Officials also say children should never handle or ignite fireworks without direct adult supervision.

“When you’re dealing with fireworks, parental guidance is important.”

-Sioux County Sheriff Nate Huizenga

Huizenga said he generally would not recommend anyone younger than about 16 years old light or operate fireworks, comparing it to driving a vehicle or operating machinery. However, he noted there does not appear to be a specific Iowa law establishing a minimum age for using fireworks.

The sheriff’s office also reminds residents never to relight malfunctioning fireworks, to soak used fireworks in water before disposal, and to be considerate of neighbors, pets, and others who may be sensitive to loud noises.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says following local ordinances and practicing safe handling can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Independence Day throughout Sioux County.
