Sioux County Democrats elected delegates to the Iowa Democratic Party’s District 4 and State Conventions during their County Convention on Saturday, March 21.
Scott Culpepper, Ginger Culpepper, and Sharon Bouma—all from Sioux Center—were chosen as delegates. Elizabeth Holtrop, also of Sioux Center, is an alternate delegate. Those elected as delegates volunteered to serve on the Platform Committee for the District Convention, while Holtrop will serve on the Rules and Nominations Committee.
Holtrop was also elected to serve as the Sioux County Democrats’ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Chair.
The District 4 Convention will be held in Fort Dodge on May 2. The State Convention is scheduled for June 13 in Des Moines.
The County Convention was attended by 20 delegates, who met at the Sioux Center Public Library. Scott Culpepper chaired the convention and appointed Holtrop to serve as the convention’s secretary. Prior to conducting elections for district and state delegates, the county delegates watched brief video greetings from the Democrats who will be on the June 2 primary ballot.
Following the election of district and state delegates, alternates, and committee members, convention participants reviewed the county platform as presented by the Platform Committee, chaired by Jimmy Bouma-Holtrop of Sioux Center. It was approved as submitted, with resolutions officially adopted that were proposed during the February Sioux County Democratic Caucuses. Those resolutions covered issues that include environmental protections, international relations, birthright citizenship, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, term limits, and civil rights protections.
The Sioux County Democrats platform was sent on to the District Platform Committee for consideration.
