Sioux Center Woman Charged With Child Endangerment

A Sioux Center woman faces a felony child endangerment charge following an alleged incident in Sioux Center.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the Sioux Center Police Department, 33-year-old Maria Vargas Hernandez is accused of striking a victim and holding the victim by the neck.

The investigating officer stated in the complaint that the victim reported being unable to breathe while Vargas Hernandez held their neck.

Vargas Hernandez was arrested Monday, August 10, and charged with child endangerment resulting in serious injury, a Class C felony. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison.

She was booked into the Sioux County Jail in Orange City and released Tuesday after posting a $10,000 cash or surety bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 25.

A criminal charge is an allegation, and Vargas Hernandez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
