Sioux Center’s youth recreation programs grew over the 2026 Summer. Doug Mosher from Sioux Center Rec and Arts Department lays out some of the programs that saw more people participate.

“K through four baseball, softball, swimming lessons were way up. Pickleball, tennis lessons, cheer camp, uh, intro to fishing. Um, they’ve all gone up in numbers. Um, some years those numbers wane and I don’t know if just when it falls on the calendar, but, um, it’s good to see some of those, uh, smaller programs, uh, sticking around and staying alive.”

More people also participated in flag football, boys & girls basketball, and youth soccer. During the year the Sioux Center Parks and Rec department won a Northwest Iowa Planning and Development award of a Community Wellness Grant which totaled over 31,000 dollars. Mosher describes what that money went toward.

“Which is going to help, um, add new soccer goals, which are very expensive. Um, and then just equipment, soccer balls, football flag football flags, uh, bases for baseball fields, um, benches and dugouts, things like that that cost money and need replace that.”

No new rec programs were started this year, but last year the town started Ninja Warrior training. The program takes place in the Dordt Dome and has so far received good participation. Mosher explains a program the department hopes to start next year.

“I think last year we started the Ninja Warrior. Um, we’re working this summer to get lined up with a running club in the summer. Um, we’ve tried different things over the years and some stick and some don’t.”
