The Sioux Center Parks and Recreation Department says it continues to focus on improving parks, trails, athletic facilities, and public spaces across the community.
Parks and Recreation Director Lee Van Meeteren delivered the department’s annual report during a recent Sioux Center City Council staff reports meeting. Van Meeteren said one of the biggest accomplishments over the past year was the addition of pickleball courts at Children’s Park, which he says received strong community support.
Storm Recovery and Tree Replanting
Van Meeteren also highlighted cleanup and recovery efforts following severe windstorms that impacted the community.
The Sioux Center Parks Department invested about $20,000 in tree planting over the past year, roughly double the city’s typical annual investment, with additional support coming through local donations from Schwebach Tree Service and Ground Effects, along with matching contributions from the city.
Van Meeteren credited parks staff for helping restore the city’s park system while continuing regular maintenance and recreation programming.
Dordt Soccer Field Partnership
Van Meeteren also said the department has taken on maintenance responsibilities for Dordt University’s soccer fields. The partnership began last fall and includes turf management, field preparation, line painting, and other maintenance practices needed to keep the fields game-ready.
City leaders noted the fields were later recognized as the GPAC Soccer Field of the Year for 2025.
Growing Demand for Soccer and Green Space
The department also continues to see growing demand for soccer space in Sioux Center. Van Meeteren said the city had as many as 14 soccer fields painted and in use during the spring season, with some fields featuring multiple layouts.
Trail and Pond Projects
Other projects discussed during the report included future bike trail connections near the new pond development area and ongoing improvements at Bridgeview Pond.
Van Meeteren also clarified that there are no fish in the pond, at least as of yet.
City leaders also discussed plans for a possible accessible fishing dock and continued cooperation with the Iowa DNR regarding pond and fish management.
Van Meeteren thanked the city council for its continued support of the department, saying parks staff strive to maintain Sioux Center’s public spaces at a high standard for residents and visitors alike.
