The Sioux Center Public Library says it has completed a formal review of the adult romance novel Icebreaker by Hannah Grace after a local family raised concerns when their young child was able to check out the title, which contains sexually explicit material.
The family submitted a Request for Reconsideration earlier this fall, and the Library Board of Trustees began its standard evaluation process. According to the library, the review included examining state and federal laws, consulting with legal guidance, comparing policies with other Iowa libraries, and considering community feedback and circulation data.
On December 1, the Board voted to keep Icebreaker in the adult section. Library officials say that the decision reflects long-standing statewide standards, the Freedom to Read principles, and the Board’s legal obligations regarding access to information. The library noted that most public libraries in Sioux County also carry the title under similar guidelines.
At the same time, trustees acknowledged parents are seeking more tools to guide what their children access. Library staff have been directed to research practical, legally compliant options — including potential updates to parental controls and clearer communication — that would provide families with additional oversight. That work is currently underway.
The issue has also drawn political attention. State Representative Skyler Wheeler posted a letter this week criticizing the Board’s decision and urging county leaders to consider funding consequences if stronger protections are not implemented.
Library Director Becky Bilby said the library remains committed to serving the full community.
“It has been my privilege to serve Sioux Center for the past 15 years,” Bilby said. “Our mission is to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our community. We remain committed to providing a welcoming environment, supporting parents and families, and helping residents access reliable information and resources they can trust.”
