Creative Living Center in Rock Valley is celebrating its 45 years of serving this community. The Rock Valley location was started 45 years ago by Andy Visser, Stan Visser, and Wilbert Vanden Bos after their pastor, Dan De Groot, told them about the need for more mental health help in the community. On a recent episode of The Daily Grind, Stan Visser describes the decision to start Creative Living Center.
“Pastor Dan De Groot was our pastor of Trinity Church in Rock Valley, and he us on on his own, invited us to breakfast a couple times and, and basically said, uh, we need, we need more therapy here. There’s people that are hurting and there’s not enough options and not enough, uh, counseling from a Christian background or Christian point of view. So, we reluctantly jumped on board and started slowly.”
Dr. Shawn Scholten lays out one of the essential qualities that has helped her at the Creative Living Center, also on a recent Daily Grind episode.
“I think I achieve a degree of being able to tuck away an idea that I want to maybe circle back to with a client and not interrupt them, hopefully. And then just, yeah, go back to that idea when it’s appropriate. We learn about like breath training, like where you do speak and intervene when people are taking a breath, especially if they’re rapid speakers and speak much.”
Creative Living Center was originally started in Rock Valley, but has grown to four locations in Northwest Iowa.
