A Rock Rapids man is facing a felony drunk driving charge after authorities say he took a side-by-side ATV without permission and crashed it near Rock Rapids over the weekend.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Alex Ohling of Rock Rapids was arrested Saturday following the incident.
Authorities say deputies were initially called to check on Ohling’s welfare after reports that he had taken his parents’ side-by-side ATV and driven away after drinking alcohol, despite not having permission to use the vehicle.
While searching for Ohling, deputies reportedly located the crashed ATV. According to the complaint, Ohling had already left the scene after being picked up by a friend.
The deputy involved in the investigation stated that Ohling declined field sobriety testing. However, the complaint says deputies observed several indicators of intoxication and found other evidence suggesting he had been drinking.
Ohling was charged with Operating While Intoxicated — Third or Subsequent Offense, a Class D felony. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
He also faces misdemeanor charges, including driving without the owner’s consent, failure to maintain control, and reckless driving.
A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th.
At last report, Ohling remained in custody at the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids.
