Race to NW Iowa Representative: Chris McGowan

Iowa’s political races are heating up with the primaries on Tuesday. Current 4th District incumbent Representative Randy Feenstra is vacating his seat to run for Governor of Iowa. One of the candidates seeking to fill the open seat is Chris McGowan, a figure in regional economic development who is running unopposed in the Republican primary.

McGowan has spent more than 15 years overseeing tri-state regional development as the president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce and the Siouxland Initiative. As part of Sioux County Radio’s Race to NW Iowa Representative series, McGowan detailed how his local upbringing, military background, and professional experience shape his legislative goals.

Public Service

Raised in Sioux City by a Vietnam veteran father and a mother active in the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame , McGowan attributes his desire to run for public office to the values instilled during his youth. He emphasized that preserving foundational liberties requires active participation from citizens across various sectors.

Primary Policy Priorities

If successful in this November’s election, McGowan plans to center his initial legislative efforts on federal spending control and agricultural advocacy:

  • Addressing the National Debt: McGowan identified federal spending as a critical short- and long-term challenge for the United States.
“I think one of the most pressing challenges that we have as a nation, and one that requires both a short and a long term solution, is our addiction to spending. We’re nearly forty trillion dollars in debt … we have an obligation to future generations to start spending more conservatively and more responsibly.”
  • Supporting Agriculture and Agribusiness: Highlighting his 20-plus years as an economic development professional, McGowan underscored the necessity of safeguarding the district’s agricultural economic base.
“We obviously recognize that the fourth Congressional District of Iowa is heavily involved in agriculture and agribusiness, and so we have to work tirelessly to support policies that promote ag and value added AG. And that’s much of what I’ve been doing as an economic development professional, uh, for the last twenty plus years.”

Looking Ahead to November

Because McGowan is the sole candidate on the Republican primary ballot, his campaign is already looking forward to the general election in November. You can learn more about him and follow along with his campaign by visiting his website at McGowan For Iowa.com.

McGowan is the second candidate featured in the Race to NW Iowa Representative series. You can read about the first candidate Dave Dawson HERE.
