NCC Adds Ultrasound Program, Opens Fall 2027 Healthcare Applications

Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon is adding a new ultrasound program and accepting applications for three healthcare degree programs for fall 2027.

Students can apply for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Healthcare Leadership, or Medical Laboratory Technology. Each leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree.

New Ultrasound Program

NCC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program will welcome its first class in fall 2027.

Students will learn to use ultrasound equipment to create images of organs, tissues, and blood flow. Those images help doctors diagnose conditions and plan treatment.

The program lasts four semesters and one summer term. It includes supervised training in hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers.

Healthcare Leadership

Healthcare Leadership, which began in fall 2026, is recruiting its next class.

The four-semester program prepares students to help manage healthcare services. Classes cover topics such as leadership, staffing, finances, and healthcare law, along with experience at area healthcare facilities.

Students can complete it alongside another health-related program. NCC also has a transfer agreement with the University of Iowa for students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in health administration.

Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical Laboratory Technology is now offered entirely through NCC. It was previously offered in cooperation with Kirkwood Community College.

Students learn to collect samples, perform laboratory tests, and evaluate results that help guide patient care. The program lasts four semesters and two summer terms.

Graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

NCC also offers a one-semester Phlebotomy Certificate for students interested in collecting and processing laboratory specimens. The certificate can count toward the laboratory technology degree.

How to Apply

All three degree programs accept new students in the fall. Ultrasound and Healthcare Leadership classes are offered on campus, with general education courses available online.
