Multiple Crashes Reported Over Thanksgiving Weekend in Sioux County

Northwest Iowa’s Thanksgiving weekend winter storm made for dangerous travel across Sioux County, and law enforcement responded to several weather-related crashes as snow and ice settled onto the roads.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office began issuing Nixle alerts Friday afternoon, warning that roads were becoming slick and snow-covered. Around 4:50 p.m., deputies were called to Highway 60 south of Hospers after a vehicle lost control, struck a reflector pole, and slid into the ditch. No injuries were reported.

Just over an hour later, another crash occurred on Highway 60 two miles south of Sheldon when a pickup lost control on the icy pavement, rolled into the median, and sustained significant damage. Sheldon Fire, Sheldon Ambulance, and Sheldon Police assisted at that scene.

A third crash — reported by the Orange City Police Department — happened near mile marker 13 on Highway 60. A southbound vehicle lost control due to the wintry conditions and left the roadway, coming to rest in the median. No injuries were reported there either.

As conditions continued to deteriorate, deputies issued additional Nixle alerts asking drivers to avoid 20th Street Southeast and South Main Avenue in Sioux Center because of another crash, and later urged motorists to turn on headlights and taillights due to blowing snow and reduced visibility.
