Mental Health Therapists Encourage Iowans to Pause Holiday Rush

With Christmas just one day away, local mental health therapists are encouraging northwest Iowans to slow down, take a breath, and be present during the final stretch of the holiday season.

Dr. Shawn Scholten and Bethany De Ruyter, mental health therapists with Creative Living Center, joined The Daily Grind to share practical and emotional guidance on what they call “pausing the holiday rush” — a mindset they say can help reduce stress and refocus attention on what matters most.

De Ruyter encouraged people to intentionally build small moments of stillness into busy days filled with shopping, cooking, and family gatherings.

Scholten said the pressure to keep moving can make it difficult to truly experience the meaning of the season.

The therapists also addressed the emotional challenges many people face at Christmas, including grief, strained relationships, and exhaustion. Scholten noted that the holidays can be particularly difficult for those who are grieving while others are celebrating.

De Ruyter emphasized that setting boundaries and practicing self-care are essential — even during the holidays.

Creative Living Center provides counseling and mental health services for individuals and families, including support for stress, grief, anxiety, and life transitions. More information is available on their website.
