Mental Health Awareness Month Nears End, But Conversations Continue in Northwest Iowa

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, local counselors say the conversations surrounding mental wellness, support, and self-care should continue long after May ends.

The national observance, founded in 1949 by Mental Health America, is designed to promote mental wellness, reduce stigma, encourage early intervention, and connect people with resources and support.

This year’s theme, “More Good Days Together,” has resonated locally through conversations on Sioux County Radio.

Dr. Shawn Scholten of Creative Living Center says the phrase serves as a reminder that everyone experiences mental health differently.

Counselors say the theme encourages people to reflect on their own mental wellness without comparing themselves to others. Shannon Van Maanen, also of Creative Living Center, says a “good day” does not necessarily mean being happy or productive.

According to the counselors, mental health challenges can range from temporary anxiety and stress to more serious mental illnesses. During a Daily Grind interview, Scholten noted that one in five adults experiences a mental health condition each year, while one in twenty adults experiences a serious mental illness annually.

The conversations also focused on the growing pressures many people face through comparison and social media, as well as the importance of authenticity and contentment.

Scholten also emphasized that mental health journeys can sometimes require taking life “one moment at a time,” especially during difficult seasons.

Throughout May, local organizations promoted Mental Health Awareness Month through outreach efforts, including positive sidewalk chalk messages, awareness apparel, and public conversations to reduce stigma and encourage support.

Counselors encourage anyone struggling with their mental health to seek help and talk with someone they trust. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24 hours a day by calling or texting 988.

Rog’s Corner airs Tuesday mornings on 93.9 KSOU following Swap and focuses on conversations surrounding mental health & suicide.
