Mark Hulshof Starts New Chapter on Sioux Center City Council

Mark Hulshof officially begins his term on the Sioux Center City Council on January 1st, following his election to the council in November.

Hulshof fills the seat previously held by John Brantsen, who served one term and did not seek re-election. He joins incumbent council members Jennifer Vermeer and Randy Vreugdenhil, who were re-elected after running unopposed.

A lifelong resident of Sioux Center, Hulshof brings years of experience in education and community involvement to the council. He spent 19 years with the Sioux Center Community School District, including 16 years as activities director, and previously taught business classes and coached multiple sports at Sioux Center High School.

In an interview with Sioux County Radio, Hulshof said his decision to step into city leadership followed a recent career transition.

Hulshof, now an insurance agent with Van Engelenhoven Agency in Sioux Center, said he had considered serving on the city council for years. Still, family and timing made the opportunity possible only recently.

He says his years working with students, families, and community members helped prepare him for the role.

As he begins his first term, Hulshof says he is focused on listening and learning as he settles into the role.

Hulshof was sworn in during the December 23rd council meeting and was elected in November with 516 votes, the highest total among council candidates in the 2025 municipal election.
