Lyon County officials have released another update following last week’s break-in at the Lyon County Courthouse, saying most offices were not compromised and there is no evidence at this time that sensitive records were accessed.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office previously arrested two individuals in connection with the incident. Those suspects face charges related to burglary and criminal mischief after investigators say the courthouse sustained significant damage throughout the building.
Investigation and Damage Assessment
In a joint statement from department heads and the Clerk of Court, officials say the courthouse was treated as a crime scene before an insurance assessment took place Thursday afternoon. Due to safety concerns — including broken glass, air quality issues, and the overall condition of offices — additional time was needed to evaluate whether non-public or sensitive information may have been accessed.
Department heads report they are continuing to review video footage and documents from the night of the break-in.
County Offices Report No Compromised Records
According to Lyon County officials, the County Auditor says there is no evidence that voter documents or voter information were compromised. The office remains in communication with the Iowa Secretary of State.
The IT Director confirms county networks and servers were not compromised.
The Assessor and Recorder report that nothing in their offices was compromised.
Treasurer and Attorney Updates
The County Treasurer identified 45 out-of-state driver’s licenses that were renewed or reissued and were waiting to be shredded, along with $3,887 in checks tied to motor vehicle and driver’s license transactions. Officials say most of those items were expired or nearing expiration, and staff are working to contact affected residents.
The County Attorney’s Office says a limited amount of paper documentation may have been viewed or taken. However, officials note that criminal and juvenile case files are almost entirely electronic, minimizing the potential impact.
Clerk of Court Statement
The Lyon County Clerk of Court reports there is no evidence that confidential or sensitive court records were accessed. Officials say all official case files have been stored electronically in the Judicial Branch case management system since 1997.
A review of older physical documents is still ongoing.
County officials say additional updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
