Historic Sioux Center bank building could find new home at Heritage Village

A historic downtown Sioux Center building could soon become part of Heritage Village under a proposal discussed during the latest Sioux Center City Council meeting.

Heritage Village Board member Monty Prins presented a proposal asking the city to allow the former Sioux Center State Bank building to be relocated to Heritage Village, where it could serve as a future museum, gathering space, and community attraction.

Prins says Heritage Village leaders have discussed eventually adding a museum or welcome center to the site for several years as part of long-term planning efforts.

Prins says learning about the possible relocation of the former Sioux Center State Bank building helped renew those conversations because of the building’s history and significance to the community.

According to the proposal, the building could provide space for historical displays, community gatherings, classroom-style activities, rotating exhibits, and storage for portions of the Wheel Pottery collection currently associated with Heritage Village.

Plans discussed at the latest council meeting would also include adding a basement beneath the building for additional storage and event support space, along with accessible entrances and restroom facilities.

In addition to the bank building proposal, Heritage Village is also requesting permission to relocate a Fourth Avenue house currently owned by Heritage Village to the site, where leaders hope to eventually create a military museum.

Council members expressed strong support for the proposal during the discussion, with several members highlighting the building’s historic and architectural significance to the community.

Council Member Eric Moerman called the proposal “a win-win all the way around,” saying the project preserves an important local building while potentially saving money compared to constructing a brand-new museum facility.

City officials noted the project would still require additional planning, fundraising, and financial review before moving forward. Heritage Village leaders say they hope to partner with community supporters as details continue to develop.

The council ultimately voted to direct city staff to continue working with the Heritage Village Board on the proposal and future project details.
