Highway 75 will undergo a significant closure starting Saturday, April 5, affecting the stretch between 5th St. S, near the Axis Apartments (formerly Franken Manor), and 2nd St. N, close to Coop Gas. During the closure, the 5th St. S intersection will remain open for access. Initially, the 2nd St. N intersection near Fruited Plain will also stay open, though it is scheduled to close later this month to accommodate utility work in that area.
For now, Highway 75 remains open with a single lane available in each direction between 9th St., where the Snieder Ins. traffic signal is located, and 5th St. S. Crews will be hard at work installing sidewalks, streetlights, and median streetscape, so drivers are urged to exercise caution as they travel through the construction zone. Truck traffic will be rerouted via 20th St. SE, then to 13th St. E, and continuing on to 20th St. NE. Businesses and properties within the closure area will still be accessible, but visitors should use side streets for entry.
Progress has already been made this year on several fronts. A portion of the 20th St. S intersection has been replaced with permanent pavement. Water mains have been installed along various sections, including the east side of Highway 75 between 5th and 3rd St. S, as well as the west side between 5th and 4th St. S and from 1st to 2nd St. S. Additionally, a storm sewer was added along 2nd St. SW, running from Highway 75 to 1st Ave. W. The southeast turning radius at the 20th St. S intersection has also been successfully paved.
Looking ahead, the project will focus on continuing water main installations between 4th St. S and 2nd St. N. Improvements to the east driveway of the library parking lot are planned, and Highway 75 access to the library will remain temporarily open during this phase of work. Crews will also press on with installing sidewalks, streetlights, and median streetscape along Highway 75 between 9th and 5th St. S. Finally, existing pavement will be removed along the stretch from 5th St. S to 2nd St. N.
The City thanks residents and travelers for their patience and cooperation as crews make progress on the 2025 Highway 75 construction project.
