Former West Lyon Softball Coach Sentenced in Student Sexual Exploitation Case

(KIWA) — A former West Lyon softball coach accused of having a long-term sexual relationship with a student has received probation and suspended incarceration after two of the four felony charges against her were dismissed.

According to court documents, Alexis Severson of Larchwood was originally charged with three counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee and one count of grooming. All four charges were Class D felonies.

Severson, who previously served as West Lyon’s head softball coach, pleaded not guilty to the charges in December. She had been arrested by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office on October 31, 2025, following an investigation into the alleged relationship.

As part of the case’s resolution, one sexual exploitation charge was amended from a Class D felony to an aggravated misdemeanor.

Another count of sexual exploitation and the grooming charge were dismissed, leaving Severson facing one felony count of sexual exploitation by a school employee and one aggravated misdemeanor count.

On the remaining felony charge, Severson was granted a deferred judgment. Under that arrangement, she was placed on probation under the supervision of the Iowa Department of Corrections for a term not to exceed five years and ordered to pay a $1,025 civil penalty.

If Severson successfully completes probation, the felony charge can be expunged from her record without a judgment of conviction being entered.

On the aggravated misdemeanor charge, Severson received an indeterminate term of incarceration not to exceed two years. The entire sentence was suspended. She was also ordered to pay an $855 fine, along with applicable surcharges.
