Dordt University ranks first among Christian colleges in Iowa and 18th among 335 Christian colleges nationwide in the 2027 Niche College Rankings.
The Sioux Center university also ranked fifth among 42 Iowa colleges overall and in the top 13% nationwide.
Niche’s annual rankings combine academic, admissions, financial, and student-life data from the U.S. Department of Education with reviews from students and alumni.
Rankings Reflect Data And Student Experiences
Greg Van Dyke, Dordt’s vice president for admissions, says combining data with personal experiences makes the recognition meaningful.
“What makes the Niche ranking especially meaningful is that it combines objective data with feedback from students and others who have actually experienced these institutions,” Van Dyke says. “We can say a lot of great things about Dordt, but it carries additional weight when students and families affirm that the experience we promise is the experience they actually have.”
Dordt also ranked second in Iowa in three categories: Best Private University, Best College with No Application Fee, and Best Small College. Nationally, Dordt placed 74th among 935 institutions in the Best Small College category.
Alongside the rankings, the university reported that 87.2% of last year’s freshmen returned for their sophomore year. That marks the eighth consecutive year Dordt’s freshman-to-sophomore retention rate has exceeded 80%.
Mission And College Fit
Van Dyke says Dordt’s educational approach centers on integrating Christian faith throughout the college experience.
“At Dordt, our Christian faith isn’t something we simply add to the college experience; our goal is for it to permeate everything we do,” Van Dyke says. “Ultimately, we want students to leave Dordt prepared for a career, but even more importantly, prepared to live lives of faithful service and calling. It’s encouraging when rankings like Niche affirm the quality of that experience.”
While the university highlighted its performance, Van Dyke says rankings should be one consideration among several for prospective students and their families.
“Rankings certainly shouldn’t be the only factor in choosing a college, but they provide helpful external validation as families consider academic quality, student experience, outcomes, and overall fit,” he says.
