Ashton Post Office Temporarily Closes Over Safety and Health Concerns

(KUOO / KIWA) — Residents of Ashton must temporarily travel nearly seven miles to Sibley for U.S. Postal Service retail and post office box services.

A notice from the Postal Service says the Ashton Post Office has temporarily closed because of what it calls “irreparable safety and health concerns for employees and customers.” The notice does not provide a potential reopening date.

A clerk at the Sibley Post Office told Community First Broadcasting that the Ashton Post Office remains temporarily closed as a postal facility but will not resume service in its current building because of those concerns.

Customers with an Ashton ZIP code must pick up post office box mail and conduct retail transactions at the Sibley Post Office until another arrangement is made.

The clerk said the Postal Service hopes to install centralized box units, commonly called CBUs, at a location in Ashton. Those units would give residents a way to retrieve their mail within the community while the post office remains closed.

No location or installation timeline for the centralized box units has been announced.
