(Storm Lake Radio) — Two northwest Iowa grain elevators will see major changes this fall as AgState moves to consolidate operations in response to shifting grain markets and rising costs.
The cooperative announced it will discontinue grain operations at its Granville location and stop receiving corn at its Marcus site effective September 1.
Changes Driven by Industry Shifts
In a press release, AgState leaders described the decision as “difficult but necessary” and said it followed extensive analysis of the cooperative’s long-term needs.
According to the cooperative, several factors led to the changes, including evolving grain marketing patterns that have seen more producers deliver directly to processors, ethanol plants, and dairies rather than local elevators.
AgState also cited increasing maintenance and operational expenses and the need to maintain safe and efficient facilities across its network.
The cooperative said the changes are intended to protect member equity and ensure AgState remains financially sustainable for future generations.
Agronomy and Energy Services to Continue
Despite the grain changes, AgState says both the Marcus and Granville locations will continue providing agronomy and energy services. Those operations are expected to remain unchanged.
Cooperative leaders recently met privately with producers to discuss the transition and answer questions about the upcoming changes.
While details from those meetings were not released publicly, AgState said it remains committed to open communication and encouraged members with questions or concerns to contact board representatives or company leadership.
Looking Ahead
In its statement, AgState emphasized its core values of respect, integrity, safety, and excellence, saying those principles will guide the transition.
Leaders say the restructuring aligns with the cooperative’s long-term strategy and will help ensure AgState remains a trusted partner for producers throughout northwest Iowa.
