(Sioux City, Iowa) – Great Plains Athletic Conference Commissioner Corey Westra has received the Keyway Award from the Rotary Club of Sioux City. The Ireton native and Unity Christian and Dordt graduate with a Master’s from Briar Cliff was on honored Monday (June 30) with the award for his leadership and contributions to the economic growth in the area.
In addition to his duties as the GPAC commissioner, Westra is the Co-Tournament Director for the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Women’s Volleyball and Women’s Basketball National Tournaments held in Sioux City. He said he was surprised and very humbled to be honored with the award.
“This is about the community,” said Westra. “I’m just one person, and my encouragement is to have everyone get involved. [If] I do my part and everyone does their part, we’ll have a great community.”
Westra said he is proud of playing a part in distinguishing Sioux City as a sports town, with the NAIA tournaments opening doors for others, such as the 3A and 4A Iowa High School State Baseball Tournaments later this month, July 21-25, at Lewis and Clark Park, the home of the Sioux City Explorers.
