Wreaths Across America in Sioux Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary this December, honoring local veterans by placing wreaths on their graves.
Speaking on Sioux County Radio’s The Daily Grind, Elaine Leusink—who helped launch Sioux Center’s chapter—shared how the program began.
Leusink’s son, Lance Corporal B. Jay Leusink, was killed in Iraq in 2006 when an IED exploded during his service with the U.S. Marines. She credited Aaron Van Beek of Midwest Honor Flight with helping bring Wreaths Across America to Sioux Center.
Last year, more than 1,200 wreaths were placed locally; this year, the total has already grown to over 1,700. Leusink said the response reflects how more veterans are being remembered and honored for their service.
Community members can support the effort today at Culver’s in Sioux Center, where a portion of all proceeds will benefit Wreaths Across America. Elaine Leusink will also be on site from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. to meet supporters.
The wreath-laying ceremony will take place Saturday, December 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Memory Gardens in Sioux Center, followed immediately by wreath placement on veterans’ graves.
