State Representative Skyler Wheeler is calling for immediate changes to Sioux Center Public Library policies after a local family reported their young child was able to check out an adult romance novel containing sexually explicit material.
In a letter posted Tuesday (December 2nd) on his social media, Wheeler said the child checked out Icebreaker by Hannah Grace, a bestselling adult romance title. The parents raised concerns over explicit content and requested safeguards to prevent minors from accessing adult-section materials.
Wheeler says the issue was brought to the attention of the Library Director and Board, but a majority of the Board voted to continue allowing minors unrestricted access to adult materials. He called that decision “a profound failure of leadership and common sense,” urging the board to reverse course and adopt enforceable policies—including prohibiting minors from checking out adult-section items and creating a review system that gives parents the final say.
He also urged the Sioux County Board of Supervisors to consider withholding or cutting county funding from libraries that do not adopt stricter protections.
Separately, 4th District Congressman and Republican gubernatorial candidate Randy Feenstra commented on the situation in a statement made today to Sioux County Radio. Feenstra said:
The Sioux Center Public Library has not yet publicly responded to Wheeler’s letter or the concerns raised.
