The West Sioux Community School District has selected Kurt Hanna as its next superintendent, bringing 14 years of administrative experience and a leadership approach focused on visibility, listening, and strengthening student opportunities.
Hanna currently serves as the principal for grades 7–12 and the special education director at Fremont Mills. School Board President Larry Gregg says Hanna emerged as the top choice following a competitive search process.
Gregg says Hanna’s experience across multiple grade levels and leadership roles made him a strong fit to lead the district moving forward.
Personal and Professional Factors Drew Hanna to West Sioux
Hanna says the opportunity represents both a professional step forward and a personal move closer to family in northwest Iowa.
His career includes teaching roles in Iowa and Texas, followed by administrative positions as an elementary principal, curriculum director, special education director, and high school principal.
Hanna says those experiences have helped prepare him for district leadership.
Leadership Approach Focused on Visibility and Relationships
Hanna says one of his priorities will be maintaining a visible presence throughout the district and community.
He says his early focus will be on learning from staff and the community before making any major decisions.
Hanna says the goal is to support existing strengths while identifying opportunities to improve and sustain success long-term.
District Faces Enrollment and Financial Pressures
West Sioux, like many rural districts, faces challenges related to enrollment and funding. Gregg says declining enrollment has created financial pressure and will be an important focus moving forward.
He says Hanna will play a key role in helping the district retain current students and attract new families.
Transition Planned with Current Superintendent Steve Grond
Hanna will work alongside the current superintendent, Steve Grond, during the transition period over the coming months.
Gregg says Grond has helped guide the district through significant challenges and progress, including the pandemic, bond issues, and facility improvements. He says the district expects a smooth transition with continued support from district staff and leadership.
Hanna to Begin July 1
Hanna will officially begin his duties as superintendent on July 1st.
He says he is excited for the opportunity and looks forward to becoming part of the West Sioux community.
