West Lyon Selects Terry Bruinsma as Next Superintendent

Terry Bruinsma has been selected to serve as the next superintendent of the West Lyon Community School District, pending formal approval by the district’s Board of Education.

Bruinsma is currently the principal at Spirit Lake Middle School and is in his 25th year in education. He spent 11 years as a classroom teacher before moving into administration, and has served for the past 14 years as a middle school principal.

West Lyon Board President Justin Metzger says the board is confident Bruinsma is the right fit following a rigorous interview process and feedback from district stakeholders.

This will be Bruinsma’s first superintendent position.

Bruinsma says returning to Lyon County was a major factor in his interest in the position. Both he and his wife grew up in the area, and he says the district has long stood out to him for its strong reputation and community support.

He says what ultimately drew his family to the district was the pride he saw from staff and community members during the interview process, and the sense that West Lyon is a place with both stability and long-term potential.

Looking ahead, Bruinsma says his leadership approach will focus on building relationships and continuing the district’s existing successes, while also finding new ways to engage students, staff, families, and community stakeholders.

Bruinsma will take over the role, with current Superintendent Shawn Kreman preparing to retire at the end of the school year. Kreman announced earlier this fall that he plans to step away after nearly four decades in education, citing family priorities and a desire to slow down.

Kreman’s retirement becomes official June 30, at the end of his current contract, giving the district time to prepare for new leadership ahead of the 2026–27 school year.

During his time at West Lyon, Kreman has overseen major district improvements, including a $32 million bond project that is set to be completed with a dedication ceremony on December 15.

The West Lyon Board of Education worked with Grundmeyer Leader Services to conduct the superintendent search, allowing for a smooth leadership transition. Bruinsma is expected to officially begin his role on July 1, 2026.
