Two Combines Damaged in Sioux Center Fires; Crews Also Battle Beanfield Fire Near Ireton

(KIWA Radio) — Two combine fires near Sioux Center Wednesday left one machine destroyed and another significantly damaged, while a separate beanfield fire southwest of Ireton Sunday caused minimal crop losses.

Two Combine Fires Near Sioux Center

Sioux Center Fire Chief David Van Holland says the first fire Wednesday, October 7, occurred near 430th Street and Harrison Avenue, about three miles south of Sioux Center Health.

The combine sustained significant damage. Van Holland says no one was injured, and nothing else of value burned.

The second fire occurred on 400th Street, east of Garfield Avenue, about four miles west of Sioux Center Health. Van Holland says that the combine was completely destroyed.

No official cause has been determined in either combine fire.

Beanfield Fire Southwest of Ireton

Ireton firefighters were called to a beanfield fire near Granite Avenue and 120th Street at approximately 2:45 p.m. Sunday, October 4. The location is about seven miles south and four miles west of Ireton.

Ireton Fire Chief Richard Steckelberg says crews arrived to find a small patch of beans burning. Firefighters used water to extinguish the flames.

As crews were wrapping up, a farmer arrived with a disk and worked the burned area under to make sure the fire was out.

Steckelberg says officials believe something hot dropped from a combine and ignited the fire. The value of the beans lost was negligible.

No injuries were reported to people, pets, or livestock.

The Akron and Hawarden fire departments assisted Ireton firefighters. Crews were on the scene for approximately an hour.
