Truck Fire South of Orange City Causes Heavy Damage

A tandem-axle straight truck was heavily damaged in a fire late Tuesday morning near Orange City. Assistant Fire Chief Al Jeltema says crews were called around 11:20 a.m. to 480th Street and Jackson Avenue, about three miles south of the K-64 and Highway 10 intersection.

When firefighters arrived, the cab of the truck was fully engulfed. Crews from Orange City, with automatic aid from Alton, used water and foam to knock down the flames. No injuries were reported.

Jeltema says the driver heard a “pop” and saw smoke entering the cab before pulling onto a gravel road to keep flames away from nearby fields. The truck was being driven to Orange City for repairs at the time.

Damage to the chassis is estimated at $100,000–$125,000, though the dump bed may be salvageable. Firefighters remained on scene for 45 minutes to an hour.
