UPDATE: Train Derailment Near Alvord

Excessive rainfall may be the cause of a train derailment near Alvord today.  Not many details have been released, but according to our sister station, KIWA, Lyon County Emergency Management Director Arden Kopishke confirms a Burlington Northern SanteFe train, hauling dry fertilizer has derailed, and some of the rail hopper cars are overturned in water.  Kopishke says two roads are closed in that area, Elmwood Avenue (K30), and 220th Street, one mile south of Alvord.

BNSF released a statement Friday afternoon saying they confirm that at approximately 3:30am Friday, a train derailed in Alvord affecting the main track.  There are no injuries and no threat to the public.  BNSF personnel are on site working to clear the incident as quickly as possible.  The cause is under investigation.
