Three-Vehicle Crash Near Sheldon Sends One to Hospital

One person was taken to the hospital following a three-vehicle crash on Monday morning near Sheldon.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene at 7:57 a.m. on Monday, January 26, near the intersection of Highway 18 and Lily Avenue, about three miles west of Sheldon.

Authorities say 20-year-old Ashtyn Kroeze of Sioux Center was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on Highway 18. As he approached stopped traffic, Kroeze moved onto the shoulder to pass the vehicles ahead.

While attempting to re-enter the roadway, investigators say Kroeze struck the rear of a 2018 Tesla Model 3 that was stopped in traffic, driven by 20-year-old Aitzy Salas of Rock Rapids.

The impact caused Kroeze’s vehicle to cross the center line and collide with a westbound 2019 Lincoln Nautilus driven by 54-year-old Michelle Miedema of Sheldon.

Salas was transported by Sheldon Ambulance to Sheldon Hospital for treatment. Kroeze and Miedema refused medical transport.

Damage was estimated at approximately $4,000 to Kroeze’s vehicle, $5,000 to Salas’ vehicle, and $15,000 to Miedema’s vehicle.

Kroeze was cited for unsafe passing.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Boyden Fire, Boyden Ambulance, Sheldon Ambulance, the Sheldon Police Department, and the Iowa State Patrol.
