Three structures were damaged Saturday afternoon in a fire at a dairy operation northwest of Rock Valley, where strong winds contributed to the flames spreading.

According to the Rock Valley Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at approximately 4:20 p.m. Saturday, October 10. Crews arrived to find heavy fire and smoke coming from a commodity shed used to store feed products for dairy cattle.

As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, windy conditions helped the fire spread to a mobile home behind the shed. A third structure, identified as a welding shed, caught fire while crews were battling the mobile home fire.

The department requested mutual aid because of the strong winds and potential for rapid fire spread, including additional tankers to help supply water.

Eleven other fire departments assisted: Boyden, Hawarden, Hull, Ireton, Orange City, Sioux Center, Hudson, Doon, Inwood, Canton, and Fairview. Rock Valley and Inwood Ambulance Services, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, and Sioux County Emergency Management also responded.

Firefighters were still extinguishing hot spots and monitoring the affected structures when the department issued its release Saturday.

There were no injuries to human life reported.
