Three Hurt in Highway 18 Collision Near Boyden

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening on Highway 18, about two miles east of Boyden.

Authorities say the collision happened around 5:20 p.m., when 42-year-old Jose Duenas of Boyden was stopped in the eastbound lane, waiting to turn onto a private driveway. A pickup driven by 19-year-old Payton Wittrock of Holstein failed to slow in time and rear-ended Duenas’ vehicle, sending both into a field south of the highway.

Duenas and a 14-year-old passenger were taken by the Boyden Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center. Wittrock was also taken to the hospital by private vehicle.

Damage to Duenas’ Chevrolet Trailblazer was estimated at $2,000; Wittrock’s Ford F-350 sustained about $20,000 in damage.

Wittrock was cited for following too closely. The Boyden Fire Department, Boyden Ambulance, Sheldon Ambulance, and the Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene.
