Tense Moments for Paullina Thursday

A large law enforcement presence went to Paullina Thursday Morning.  Shortly before 10 am, O’Brien County officials received a call from an individual claiming to have shot another person and said they would commit further acts of violence against other individuals and law enforcement.  Law enforcement responded to the 4500 block of Red Wood Ave., northeast of Paullina. Precautions were made for nearby homes and businesses, and Mill Creek campground was evacuated.

Residents were warned by the Obrien County Sheriff that there was an active situation in the area, but later a follow-up call told them the area was clear.

The HEAT team (High-Risk Entry and Arrest Team) was activated but the situation was resolved before the team arrived. Drone operators with O’Brien County EMA, Iowa State Patrol and Sioux County Sheriff’s Office were able to contact the residents and locate the suspect.

Due to the severity of the threats, several agencies were called in to assist the O’Brien County Sheriff including Sioux, Clay and Plymouth County Sheriff’s Offices, police departments from Sheldon, Hartley, Paullina, and Spencer, the Iowa State Patrol, ATF, O’Brien County Conservation, O’Brien County EMA, the HEAT Team, Paullina and Primghar Ambulance teams.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say that nobody was injured as the caller had claimed. Officials have not said if anyone has been arrested.
